Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Warming Center?
A Warming Center is a designated facility or space that provides temporary shelter and relief to individuals during cold weather conditions. It ensures that people, especially those who are homeless or without adequate heating, can find warmth and safety.

Why do we need a warming center in Lewistown?
In smaller towns, resources for individuals experiencing homelessness or those in need may be limited compared to larger urban areas. A warming center can provide a critical lifeline during harsh weather, offering warmth, shelter, and essential items to those without access.

How was the community made aware of Shelter Solutions' plan for a warming Center?
In April 2023, the group began presenting their plans to local government bodies to gain support for their initiative. Shelter Solutions for Central Montana has had a booth at the Chokecherry Festival to share information, engage with the community, and recruit volunteers. In the fall of 2023, they contacted service organizations and churches. The initiative received coverage in the News-Argus, with updates and interviews on the radio. Moving forward, they will continue to communicate through local media, in-person events, social media, and their website, encouraging questions from the community.

Will a shelter be a burden on taxpayers?
Shelter Solutions is a nonprofit organization that relies on donations and small grants to fund its operations and initiatives. Their funding model underscores their commitment to serving the community through volunteer efforts and community support rather than relying on government funding.

When does Shelter Solutions Warming Center operate?
This year, the warming center will be open from 7 PM to 7 AM in January and February, though hours may vary depending on the weather. We will make every effort to respond to extreme weather situations throughout the winter months. We recommend checking the local website or calling for the most current information.

Where is the Warming Center Located?
The current location is Saint James Episcopal Church. 502 W Montana St.

Who can access Shelter Solutions Warming Center?
Individuals who are experiencing homelessness or are experiencing housing insecurity due to factors such as eviction, domestic violence, or economic hardship are eligible to access warming centers. All guests are welcome, and no one will be turned away due to a lack of resources.

How can someone access Shelter Solutions Warming Center?
Guests can access the center by checking in during designated hours or by referral from emergency services, partnering organizations, and churches. Upon arrival, an intake process includes agreeing to the procedures and process at the warming center.

How can I volunteer at the warming center?
Follow the link on the website or contact a board member to sign up to begin the onboarding process for becoming a volunteer.

How will the area be maintained? Will cleanliness be an issue?
We have volunteers to clean and organize the area. The guests also help us care for the surrounding area, from shoveling the walk to completing minor repairs.

What if other communities transport homeless people to Lewistown because they know we have this facility?
We are members of the statewide Coalition to Solve Homelessness and cooperate with other organizations to ensure that we are not overrun while also providing safety and security to our community members.
