Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Warming Center?

A Warming Center is a designated facility or space that provides temporary shelter and relief to individuals during cold weather conditions. It ensures that people, especially those who are homeless or without adequate heating, can find warmth and safety.

Why do we need a warming center in Lewistown?

In smaller towns, resources for individuals experiencing homelessness or those in need may be limited compared to larger urban areas. A warming center can provide a critical lifeline during harsh weather, offering warmth, shelter, and essential items to those without access.

How was the community made aware of Shelter Solutions' plan for a warming Center?

In April 2023, the group began presenting their plans to local government bodies to gain support for their initiative. Shelter Solutions for Central Montana has had a booth at the Chokecherry Festival to share information, engage with the community, and recruit volunteers. In the fall of 2023, they contacted service organizations and churches. The initiative received coverage in the News-Argus, with updates and interviews on the radio. Moving forward, they will continue to communicate through local media, in-person events, social media, and their website, encouraging questions from the community.

Will a shelter be a burden on taxpayers?

Shelter Solutions is a nonprofit organization that relies on donations and small grants to fund its operations and initiatives. Their funding model underscores their commitment to serving the community through volunteer efforts and community support rather than relying on government funding.
